NORVIJAURE

 

 

The lake Norvijaure, 25 km west of Jokkmokk, has given name for the whole deposit of limestone, considered the largest in northern Europe.

Geology:

Norvijaure limestone is medium- to coarse-grained. The main part is white, but in zones there is a green and orange variety.

The limestone occurs in a 5 km long zone.

 

 
East of the limestone the dominant rock types are mica schists and biotite-rich rocks believed to be clastic sediments.

Large piles of waste rock.
